A MAGAZINE ABOUT STYLISH CINEMA
A focus on our relationship with cinema and how we draw inspiration from it. Photographer and filmmaker Richard Kern selects his three titles
Richard Kern, photographer and filmmaker remains, first and foremost, a portraitist. For more than two decades Kern has sought to unravel and illuminate the complex and often darker sides of human nature. Kern makes the psychological space between the sitter, photographer and audience his subject. With his dry, matter of fact approach, he underlines the absurdity of truth and objectivity in photography while playing with our reliance upon taxonomies around sexual representation - Matthew Higgs via richardkern.com
FILM PICKS WITH
RICHARD KERN
Blow-Up 1966 Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni
"My parents wouldn’t let me go see this movie when I was a kid. I’ve since watched it maybe 10 times and each time I see something new. Antonioni keeps it slow, quiet, and loaded with visual clues allowing the viewer to think about what’s happening and what it means to see” something. The main character, a young, wildly successful, and narcissistic photographer in Swinging 1960’s London, is an early prototype for modern creatives." RK
McCabe & Mrs. Miller 1971 Directed by Robert Altman
"Last time I saw this revisionist Altman western was at a museum showing an old 35 mm print. The scratches and faded color only added to the lonely ‘I’ve got nothing to do’ rainy afternoon feeling of the movie. Altman was at the height of his powers here, experimenting with both the sound and look of visuals. The last 20 minutes still packs a punch." RK
Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud 1995 Nelly et Mr. Arnaud Directed by Claude Sautet
"Being an older man, I can appreciate any Claude Sautet movie because they are usually about middle aged men confronting some change in their life that they have no control over – like losing their business, their lover or their social position. This was the last film he made and to me it’s one of his best but maybe you have to be an old guy to appreciate it." RK
